About the Company
Ben Challum Limited, managed by Matthew Mauchlen, operates an award winning mixed farming enterprise based in Strathearn, Scotland. Originally formed in 1942 around the purchase of part of the Breadalbane Estate, the company was one of the pioneers of cross-highland cattle breeding and one of the first Luing breeders.
Now located in Strathearn, the Ben Challum suckler cow herd, is based on the Sim-Luing cross which benefits from the hybrid vigour of a first cross between pure Simmental and pure Luing breeds to produce the Sim-Luing cow. The hardy aspect of the Luing allows outwintering, whilst the Simmental provides beef quality and milking ability.
Arable cropping is focused on quality cereals being grown to meet Scottish demand for oats for milling, barley for malting and wheat for distilling, as well as grain, straw and protein being produced to provide as much self-sufficiency as possible for the suckler herd.
